Glass railings have become one of the most requested custom glass upgrades in the New Orleans area, and it’s easy to see why. Whether you’re outfitting a second-story balcony in the Garden District, a rooftop deck in the Warehouse District, or a staircase in a Metairie home, glass railings offer an unobstructed view while still meeting code requirements for safety.
Types of Glass Railing Systems
There are three main system types, and the right one depends on your space, budget, and aesthetic goals.
Post-and-panel systems use vertical metal posts set at intervals with glass panels mounted between them. This is the most common system and works well in most residential and commercial applications.
Standoff systems attach the glass directly to the deck or wall structure using metal standoffs. These have a very clean, minimalist look and work particularly well on decks and balconies.
Frameless base shoe systems use an aluminum channel mounted to the floor, into which the glass panels are set and secured. No posts or standoffs visible — just clean glass from floor to top rail. This is the most open look and is popular in high-end installations.
Permit Requirements in New Orleans
Glass railing installations in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish typically require a building permit, particularly for elevated decks, balconies, and staircases. Residential railings generally must be at least 36 inches high (42 inches for commercial applications and elevated decks over 30 inches off the ground), and the glass must meet impact and load requirements.
We recommend checking with the City of New Orleans Department of Safety and Permits or Jefferson Parish’s inspection department before beginning any railing project. Your contractor should be pulling the permit — if a company offers to skip the permit process, that’s a red flag.
