If you’ve spent a summer in New Orleans, you already know hurricane season isn’t a maybe — it’s a question of how many and how close. June 1 marks the official start, but the smart move is to handle the small stuff in June instead of joining the panic in August.
Failed seals, cracked windows, and that storefront glass you’ve been putting off — they’re all easier (and cheaper) to deal with right now than the week before a storm tracks our way. Here are the five glass issues every New Orleans homeowner and business owner should fix before the first storm of the season.
1. Fogged or Failed Insulated Glass Units
That cloudy, moisture-trapped look between the panes? That’s a failed seal on an insulated glass unit. It’s already letting in air — which means it’s already letting in moisture. In a storm, that compromised seal can fail, allowing wind-driven rain to push into your home.
These don’t need a full window replacement. We can replace just the glass unit itself, often the same week.
2. Cracked or Chipped Glass That’s “Holding For Now”
A small crack you’ve been ignoring isn’t going to stay small. Heat cycling alone causes glass to expand and contract daily — and a Louisiana summer accelerates that. Add hurricane-force wind pressure to the equation, and “holding for now” becomes “shattered on the kitchen floor” fast.

4. Loose or Damaged Window Seals
Window seals aren’t sexy, but they’re what keep water out. If you’re seeing peeling, gapping, or signs of moisture intrusion around your window frames, the seal is failing. A storm doesn’t need to break your glass to damage your home — water finding a path through a bad seal can do plenty on its own.
5. Glass Shower Enclosures Near Exterior Walls
Less obvious, but worth checking: glass shower enclosures on exterior walls. Flying debris from a storm doesn’t stop at the window — anything that breaches an exterior wall has a path to interior glass. Tempered shower glass is safer (it breaks into pebbles rather than shards), but if you have older non-tempered glass, now’s the time to upgrade.
Why June Is the Right Time
