One of the most common questions we get from homeowners ordering custom glass is: “How do I measure correctly?” It’s a fair question — glass is unforgiving. Unlike wood, you can’t trim it down a little if it comes out slightly too big. Getting the measurement right before fabrication saves time, money, and frustration.
General Measuring Principles
Always measure twice — ideally three times — before submitting dimensions. Use a metal tape measure rather than a cloth or plastic one, which can stretch or flex. Measure in inches to the nearest 1/16th of an inch for precision. For anything that will be recessed into a frame or channel, measure the opening, not the visible area.
Measuring for a Glass Table Top
For a rectangular or square tabletop, measure the length and width of the tabletop surface you want covered. Decide whether you want the glass to match the table edge exactly or extend slightly beyond it — typically, 1/2″ to 1″ overhang is common for a finished look on dining tables.
For an oval or irregularly shaped table, the easiest approach is to create a template using cardboard or paper, trace the exact shape, and bring it to us. We can cut glass to match a template. Specify your edge finish preference and glass thickness (1/4″, 3/8″, or 1/2″ tempered glass is the most common for table tops).

Measuring for a Glass Shelf
For a shelf that fits between two walls or inside a cabinet, measure the width of the opening at the front, middle, and back — older homes especially can have walls that are not perfectly parallel. Use the smallest of the three measurements and subtract 1/8″ to allow for easy installation.
If you’re drilling the glass for standoff hardware, tell us the hole size and placement when you order — holes must be drilled before tempering.
Measuring for a Window Glass Replacement
For a single-pane window, measure the opening in the sash at the width and height. The replacement glass should be about 1/8″ smaller than the opening in each direction to allow for glazing compound and slight movement.
For insulated glass unit (double-pane) replacement, measuring is more involved. In most cases, it’s easiest to remove the old unit and have it measured directly, or bring us photos and measurements from the failed unit.
